The only one you really need is the 'Title' tag although it is not strictly a tag but an 'element' http://www.seo-blog.com/title-element.php
Optionally you can use a description tag and a keywords tag http://www.seo-blog.com/description-meta-tag.php and here http://www.seo-blog.com/keyword-meta-tag.php
Remember it's not just about appearing in the search engines - it's appearing on the first page of the search engine results for your keywords that's important.

Just put the buzz words of your site in the META tag, because when engine searches for a site ,it just checks the meta tag of your home page which will be written in HTML,syntax for meta tag is //information about the site .This tag should be at the top

Put the tags related to your website. e.g. if your website is about fun & games, then put all those tags, so that when someone types in "fun", "game" etc etc in the google box, your website also appears in the search results.
