I was disapointed to see this entry on a superstitions web site. I love them and have started a collection of feathers, pictures, and figurines. Do people believe these things? Is that why it is so hard for me to find more peacock items?

"A peacock feather has an evil eye at the end. Argus, the Greek legend, says a hundred eyed monster was turned into a peacock with all it's eyes in it's tail.
Peacock feathers indoors - bad luck
Hearing a peacock cry - storms approaching"

Hey, don't be bummed. Enjoy your feathered friends. It could be quite possible that this is you totem--a creature you associate with.

Although it is regarded as unlucky in Western tradition, the Hindus revere it as a sacred bird. In Tudor times, it was considered a royal bird and it was claimed that its cry scared off venomous animals and could even foretell approaching storms. In India, it was believed they could devour snakes.

The "Eye" in art was a symbol of heaven. Any taboo about the feathers come from "the tradition that peacocks were kept in the temples of ancient Greece, where the removal of their tail feathers was a crime punishable by death."

Another story that explains their bad luck is that they are the eyes of "the seven deadly sins, plucked out as a punishment by God." It goes that they are never far from the bird, always trying to steal their eyes back.

So love those little critters--the superstitions around it were made to protect it, and superstitions never stopped people for owning black cats if they want to!

I heard the Greek legend. I've never heard that superstition of their feathers indoors being bad luck nor the cry meaning a storm's approaching. As you well know, they seem to cry out all the time. :)
