Smile at him...yet that would fall under the category of flirting. To strike up a topic of very light question or conversation is nice way to let a guy know your interested in him, his opinion and learn if he has an interest in 'staying in your space' by sharing conversation back with you. That is still flirting...yet a guy doesn't notice it as much as such.
