Use Partition Magic program. It will let you to resize your big partition to a smaller one, and create more partitions when the hard drive has space left.

I did this many many times.

First off, it is always recommended that you defragment your disk twice before partitioning when you've had an OS running on that disk. The files you already have may not be contiguous so I would recommend running the defrag tool in windows a couple of times.
It is true you need a 3rd party software to be able to do what you are trying to do and I know there is a lot of those out there lfor windows, I remember you had to pay for most or some would give you a demo version that will let you play with things but wont write the changes to disk.

I recommend an open source tool, Gparted (gparted.sourceforge.net). it is mostly used in linux environments but the latest LiveCDs have the abilty to partition NTFS file systems. Get a livecd (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828)
and pop it in, you might want to check your BIOS settings to see if your boot order is set to boot from CD before the your HD. After that it should all be pretty simple, it is a powerful tool that has a user friendly GUI.
If you're into consoles and command prompts, put any Linux llive cd and do "fdisk" of "cfdisk" from the terminal.

Good luck.. this should be pretty simple

Once you install the XP OS, you can use Disk Management to create/delete/modify partitions except the partition that is used to host the OS itself. So, if you only have 1 80 GB HD and you have created a single 80 GB partition and you install the XP OS in it, you need a third party software to split the 80 GB partition.

The most well known third party software to do this is Partition Magic. However, I've heard free alternative like Partition Logic and GParted. For both Partition Logic and GParted you have to burn it into a bootable CD and then boot from the CD and then you can manipulate your partition.

You need a set of disk tools like Partition Magic or Ghost. If you hunt around a bit you can download Partition Magic 7.0 for free. Don't get below 7.0 though because the older versions won't support an 80 GB hard drive.

There may be some other out there, just hunt around.

Use Acronis Disk Director. It is a reliable partitioning utility that will allow you to resize, move, copy, split, and merge partitions without losing your data. It has a friendly interface so you won't have any trouble using it. Visit a Disk Director site for more info:

If the OS has already been installed, I don't believe that you're going to be able to re-partition the disk without using 3rd party tools. As one of the people above mentioned, Partition Magic can do some crazy stuff with partitions that you're not normally supposed to be able to do. It MAY be able to do this (I'm not entirely sure.)

You must partiton your drive during the installation process. It gives you that option. If you partition after it's been installed you will loose data.
