My windows laptop is a little more than a year old and lately, it just shut off on me, just dies. It's always plugged in, full battery. And after it turns off, I just click the power button again and it comes back on normal. But sometimes it shuts off again and again! If my laptop comes back on, then it must not be the battery, right? What is wrong with my laptop?

I had the same problem. Sometimes, when it is on for too long and is not ventilated properly or when it is running a high capacity program like a computer game, it tends to shut off on its own. I'd see a professional about it. Hopefully you have insurance or a warranty.

It's NOT because it has too many files open.

It's possible it's overheating although I think you would probably notice if that was happening.

It might be the Windows hibernation mode too, although that wouldn't explain why it would repeatedly shut off.

I suppose a virus is possible although unlikely.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say possibly a bad battery or a loose connection to the battery. FYI, I believe it is not necessarily good for the battery to be plugged in 24/7. It will decrease the life of the battery, although this shouldn't be the issue if it's less than a year old.

Just 2 cents from an IT consultant

Theres a possibility the battery may have a dead cell or just flat out be dead. Call around and see if someone will test the battery for you free of charge, Best Buy, circuit City, ect... I am sure they could do it no problem.

It is either overheating or the system has alot of files and needs a way to deal with all that memory so it shuts down.

Overheating issue i guess. Check the fans if it working. Buy the cooling pad for notebook if necessary.

i got same problem before and gave it to repair, and now it is working smoothly, i think its problem of fan, may be its broken or working not well, tht makes computer hot and system turns off itself. so i think you can give to repair from where you bought. if you still have warrenty, they can repair it free and if over date then also can fix it but may take money.

If you are not using your keyboard at the time, it could just be going into hibernation mode. Just turn off that feature.

Maybe it gets to hot and shuts off, the fan probably broke.
