For many years (I'm 62) I have been a sci-fi fan, and one of the movies that first got me interested in that genre was that movie. Many people consider that movie to be a sci-fi classic, me included. Well for many years now, I have read and heard it reported that there was going to be a sequel. As you who have seen the movie may remember it ended with one of the best lines ever in a movie, as far as a sequel being made is concerned. Any word on when, and if a sequel is, or will ever be made?

It is actually a remake of the movie, and not a sequel, which is scheduled for summer 2008 (around May). Please find the confirming source below.

Well, it's one of my favorite sci-fi movies from my youth, too (almost 51). But, I don't recall any mention of a sequel in the special features section of the DVD. And I was only 1 when it came out.
I could see where it could come in, though. For instance, you could incorporate some of the recent Shuttle disasters as actions taken from light years away. The Galactic Police being busy for the last 50 years fighting some action at the galactic core and not having the resources to send to our little backwater corner to settle our hash, once and for all. Something like that.
So, it would be nice to see a good sequel to that classic but there might not be enough people that would appreciate it what with all the distractions we have these days and Hollywood tries to bet very conservatively these days.
Oh no, a remake.... The original was really great because of the minimal amount of special effects. It was primarily the acting which drove home the story. Well, we'll see.

The day the earth stood still 2/ The evening of the second day by Ray Bradbury was never made . However they did do an outline for a film. Just do a google search on The day the earth stood still sequel and it should tell you everything you need.

As others have said, it looks like a remake is slated for 2008. I have my doubts that Hollywood can stay true to the ideals and intentions of the original. They'll probably just turn it into another brainless action picture.
In 1981, Ray Bradbury wrote an outline for a sequel which you can read here: http://www.scifiscripts.com/scripts/sequel_1.htm

There is a remake with possible release sometime in 2008.
: Fox confirmed that this is true and the date is correct, meaning a The Day the Earth Stood Still remake is definitely underway for summer 2008!

A true classic with Michel Rennie as Klaatu. I think it was 1951 however. But yours is the 1st I have heard of a sequel.....that would be great to see if it is ever made. I wonder who will play Gort....
