The atomic mass for each element is on most periodic tables. One problem in interpreting what the mass number is is that the periodic table lists the average atomic mass distributed by prevalence of isotopes. The atomic mass of an element is the sum of its protons and neutrons. How can it be anything but a whole number? The answer is that it can't, but the average of atomic weights of isotopes can be. The atomic weight of H is 1, but there are 2 isotopes: deuterium and tritium. Deuterium has 1 neutron and tritium has 2 (+ the one proton to make 2 and 3). Since there is more H with just 1 proton and no neutrons, the average will be close to 1.
