Buying on margin? A margin is a loan up to 10 times the amount of the principal. So $10,000 can control $100,000 of an iteam (stock, forex, commodity). This allows a person to make money when there is little movement in the direction (a person can invest saying something will go up or down (called shorting)) the trader thnks the iteam will go. On the other hand, they are responsible for the loan, which could wipe out the trader if the iteam moves in the wrong direction.
