It may be a genetic thing or something that happens in the womb. Gay men may have more feminized brains and lesbians more masculinized brains. There are still masculine gay men and feminine lesbians but that is not to discount those group tendencies.

I'm a lesbian and I consider myself androgynous when it comes to personality. I consider myself somewhere in between masculine and feminine. I think strictly speaking most people fall somewhere in between.

That generalization is not realistic, but it comes from the straight world. I am straight, but I have had gay friends over the years, I have been to gay clubs, and parties, and I can tell you there are many very virile, masculine gay men, and many very sexy, feminine women. Perhaps you see what you want to see. The first time I was at a gay club was actually quite an eye-opener for me. If all you want is to have people agree with you, and curse those of us that know better then you should go back to your chums and giggle in the school yard.

This is a steriotype, but I understand why many people would come to this conclusion. Basically, unless people have many friends who are gay and lesbian, most people's images of gay and lesbian people are from the mass media.
The mass media feeds people images (basically images that feed apon people's steriotypes) such as that gay men are feminine and lesbian women are masculine, in appearance and mannerisms. Perhaps because the public could not cope to think that gay and lesbian people are just like anyone else. Infact, gay and lesbian people do not walk around with their sexual orientation tattooed on their foreheads and therefore, anyone, like your neighbour, boss, workmate, the people in your neighbourhood and in the world in general do not advertise their sexual orientation.
What does it say about human nature and American society that so many enthusiasms of the average lesbian and the average gay man diverge so strikingly? More immediately, why do the media refuse to notice it?
Stereotypes may be learned through personal experience or indirect means; parents, teachers, peers or the mass media, though lack of first hand experience tends to lead to more reliance on stereotypes.
Stereotypes act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people—usually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation.
The media participate in the "symbolic annihilation" of gays and lesbians by negatively stereotyping them (often consigning them to the margins of entertainment media, playing either "colourful" and "flamboyant" characters or dangerous psychopaths), by rarely portraying them realistically, or by not portraying them at all.

There are gay men who are top and others bottom. The tops are masculine and the bottom are feminine (most of times). Same with lesbians, those who play the masculine role are masculine and those who play the feminine role are feminine.

David, you don't get around much, do you? Just how many Gay men and women do you know? You could be surrounded by them and not have a clue. Your question answers itself. You only notice butch women and effeminate men...and in fact, that is no guarantee they are gay. It is a big world with room for all kinds of men and women. Why are you so judgmental. .... does any of this really effect you?

A true generallity. You obviously haven't been around that many gay people. They range in all sorts just like anyone else.
