I am in Huntsville, Alabama and Ive started an home base business with very low start up cost and has been very profitable for my family.
I am an on-line florist. I work from home. I also put flowers, plants, silks in places like mom and pop grocery stores at no charge to them then I pay them a 20% commission. I also put plants in restaurants and maintain them as well.
I used my own refrigerator at first for fresh flowers. my own yard for plants. Freshen them up with a bow, plant glow cleaner and a new container.
I took advantage of all Yahoo had to offer as far as free business websites and hosting. Within a few weeks I was link to other sites free of charge. I dedicated a phone line just for the business. I made business cards from my pc and every arrangement I send out has a business card on that arrangement. To clean my pc $0.00 cost, To set up my office $1.08 ( pack of highlighter, pen, paper clips, tacks, ect. from the Dollar Store.) Web sites were $0.00 with yahoo. Domain Name through Yahoo was $1.99 for a year. Business cards $18.00 enough to make 1000 cards. I made 50 at a time to save on ink. I use my paper on front side and back side then I shred it and use it for filler in baskets. Smiles thinking about it. My county liecence was $5.00 and my city liecense was $42.00. To start with I paid my taxes every 6 months.
I use Microsoft Word which is on almost every XP pc and I use that for my accounting purposes. Again the cost was $0.00.
To except credit card information use Element Solutions they dont charge you for your machine and has the lower points for every dollar you collect then most Ive delt with . All of which doesnt have to have a line of its own just a reqular phone line when you need to process. They also dont charge you for the terminal fees.
I used our old refrigerator, as old as it was Id say the cost of it was around $50.00. Took the racks out and replace it with dollar store trash cans which cost $4.32 . As far as ribbon and such I bought those from an on-line company as well. Balloons and such too.
If you have children then its great when it comes time to deliver then take the kids with you. I took my grand daughter to school and her brothers would go with me to make my deliveries .
The money I saved on store fronts and other expenses ect.. I used to change our home existence. I paid off old debts. Ive paid off all our vehicles. Every appliance in the house is new and upgraded.
I have enough home business from neighbors, family, friends, that know I do this and this week Im doing weddings. Keep fresh plants in beautiful containers through out your house even on the tables. Thats your best advertisement. Ive even had the cable men , church women ect see the work then they know where they can come get fresh cut arrangments ect.... I keep cards with me if Im at the bank, grocery store, other business I leave a stack.
On Saturdays I take an arrangment to the church along with my card and I leave it free of charge. I run 7 days a week. If I have flowers to sell Im selling them.
If you dont think this is the business for you then if you need flowers we send flowers any where in the world! God Bless

Starting a home business greatly depends on the capability of the person and what the needs are in the area. Look around you and see where there is a need and go for it! You dont want to start a business where there are already 80 of the same businesses in your same area.
