The Mayan Indians are aware that many things related to time are cyclical, meaning they repeat over and over. Examples of things that repeat are days, months, and years. When they end they just repeat themselves over again. In 24 hours we will see the sun rise again, unless earth stops spinning, at its current rate of speed. The Mayans have several calendars they work with; each one is used to keep track of a cycle of time. Their meticulous preoccupation with time keeping gives them almost magical powers of prediction. No, it's not magic, they just know what they are measuring.
From what I understand about the time in question, I think we are in for a bumpy ride for the next few years. Some of the things that the Mayans predicted are already starting to happen: Things like global warming due to massive solar flares and the migration of our magnetic north pole to the South Atlantic. The time's symptoms are being witnessed in the form of more powerful hurricanes and stronger earthquakes and tsunamis. The following is a summary of what I have read about the Mayans and their predictions for the time.
______________________________
The Mayan Indians regard their beliefs as both a science and a religion. Their discoveries are not done in a lab but rather by tapping into the cosmos via the mind. Through the extensive use of meditation, they are able to discover and track planetary movements as well as space anomalies such as black holes. They used this information to construct a calendar so accurate that no present day calendar can rival its accuracy. They also use this information to predict future events.
According to some Mayans, this date marks the end of the long count of their calendar; Set to end on a winter solstice (12-21-12). On this date, our Solar system will be center aligned with the Milky Way's equator. Our sun will be centered in a position called "The Tree of Life", as it does every 25,800 years. We will have exited the forth dimension and entered the fifth dimension. This date also marks the end of the Mayan "Great Cycle" of the long count, which is equivalent to 5125 years. We exit the age of Pisces and enter the age of Aquarius.
In this position, unusually violent sun spot activity may cause a pole shift. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods will run ramped. Significant loss of life will occur. Earths magnetic field will temporarily collapse. Humans will be exposed to a cosmic energy that will facilitate enlightenment. In this state of higher consciousness, we will recognize that all matter, plant, animal, mineral are bound as one. This realization will mark the end of wars for a time. People will be able to connect to the essence of god (vibrating energy) like only the most enlightened can.
The date marks a goal to be reached. Evil forces will make every effort to keep humanity from reaching the date. These evil forces are those entrenched in the third dimension, in the Material world. They have no desire to leave this age and wish to continue exploiting and endangering all life for material gain.
Wars just prior to this date could be most devastating, with a loss of as much as 2/3 of our population anticipated. The resulting man made environmental damage could make life inhospitable for those who survive.
Humans have freewill, Man's future is not set yet, nor predictable:

I think they just figured that people who were a bit closer to the date would finish writing the calendar, as it was pretty far in the distance for them. I'm sure they weren't counting on being wiped out. Since they were wiped out, they had to stop sometime. Or perhaps it got too complex for them---well, at any rate, I doubt the world would end. As unlikely as it is, that would be cool if it did, though--it would show that they sure knew a lot of things which we have no idea about now.

I think they just happened to stop at a chosen end of their cyclical calendar.
But I truly hope that the people who believe that a massive worldwide enlightenment and higher vibrational change are correct in their ideas. I would love to see people living in peace and mutual understanding and acceptance - regardless of religious/spiritual beliefs, race, sex, nationality, wealth, etc.
I only hope that humanity doesn't succeed in destroying itself before that happens. I'd LOVE to see what happens, though I suspect that nothing more will happen then than happened at the year 2000.
