I'm writing an essay on censorship. I've heard that yes and no, to my question. People have even told me that "F" words are dropped in once or twice in PG-13 movies. Is there any site that gives clarification? I need substantiate some of my ideas.

thanks

If it is used to refer to a sexual act, yes, that's an automatic "R." But if it is being used without a sexual connotation, it can be used a few times before the movie is rated R.

Go to the MPAA website

ratings are very subjective- Bono used the "F" word at the grammys a few years ago and the FCC did not issue a fine because it was not used in a "Sexual" content

The "F" word would probaby be the best point for your paper because it can be used to mean so many things and the ratings board seems to acknowledge that.

Part of the issue people have is that there is no specific scale of measurement (like 4 "F"'s equal a PG-13, and 5 "F"'s equal a R, etc)

http://www.filmratings.com/ actually discusses the f-word..

"A film's single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, shall initially require the Rating Board to issue that film at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive must lead the Rating Board to issue a film an R rating, as must even one of these words used in a sexual context."

So once in a non-sexual context is PG-13, more than once or with a sexual meaning is automatically R.

If it is used more than once in a movie it automatically receives an R rating.
It can only be used once in a PG-13 movie.

Restricted-Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian (age varies in some locations). This signifies that the rating board has concluded that the film rated contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their children to see it. An R may be assigned due to, among other things, a film's use of language, theme, violence, sex or its portrayal of drug use.

Why don't you send an e-mail to the FCC? That way you'll have an expert reference to throw into the report.
