The first few birthday's are more for the parents than for the child. Babies do not know or care about birthday parties. So nothing fancy. Balloons, maybe streamer, themed plates and napkins. Remember all of this is for you, baby does not care.
I would have a cake and invite relatives and maybe close friends. If you know people with children close to your baby invite them, too. Just make sure the number of people you invite does not get too large.
They should have eaten lunch or supper before they come to the party so do not feel like you need to feed them snack foods. You are inviting them to your child's first birthday party, not a dinner party.
Babies get tired and irritable and need naps even on their birthday. Too much going on will make them more irritable. So make things short and sweet. Set a time on the invitations that shows the hours of the party and make it no longer than 2 hrs long.
My daughter made cupcakes for her son's first birthday instead of a cake and had cold drinks. The cupcakes were great because everyone just wants a taste of cake not a large piece so there was less waste. (The leftovers froze well, too.)
Good luck!!

Nothing major, it only stresses the poor child out. A few guests, Grand parents, maybe aunts and uncles a friend with kids the same age. A small cake, Save presents to open later because the child won't be interested anyway. They don't remember their first birthdays anyway and more often than not when a major fuss is made they get cranky and it winds up miserable.

My family celebrates by having a chocolate cake for the birthday girl and a separate cake for the rest of the family and friends that come to the party. Also have some presents and of course take pictures.
I know the cake will make the birthday boy filthy but it is all in the fun. Make sure she is just in her diaper because you will want to wash her up immediately.

Well! It's so simple! You can have my way! 1st plan(within the morning & afternoon)---Just plan it out within a charity or orphanage maybe. It will not only double the fun but you did triple it also! You did also help those poor children who couldn't afford and see a party like yours. Just make fun games, show them some movie(could be "BARNEY or any FAIRYTALE MOVIE"), bring some mascots and don't forget those party bags where you can place some yummy candies and some good toys. Then dont' forget to decorate the place, make it a place where children could draw fantasies to it! Don't ever forget to make a video to it.(you can shpow the video to your child when he/she gets older, you know what, your teaching her/him to be kind and open minded also by doing tose things) 2nd plan(in the evening)---Now it's adults and relatives turn to party out! Just make a dinner with the whole family, relatives and friends(you don't want them to be mad, right?, now it's their turn to celebrate with the child!) Make good musics around and make good foods too. Or simply you can have a cater service. Well, thats all for now! Good luck! And say advanced happy birthday for your child for me. Hey, don't forget to make it memorable and have pictures on it! :-)

Honestly....keep it low key and relatively short. My daughter just had hers....and she was kind of like "uhhhh....okay why are all these people in my face with cameras?".
Pick a theme....get a cute hat and decorations. Put a great outfit on her. But I would keep the festivities brief....so as to not overwhelm her.
One thing we did was to get a big cake for all of us and a little one for her to get all crazy with. Those were the best photos of the night!! She really liked digging into that little cake!!
Have fun....they only stay little for such a short time!

Go to birthdayinabox.com, or birthdayexpress.com. You can get everything in one place so you don't have to shop around, and they both have a lot of 1st birthday themes.
We did a "little lady" theme with lady bugs. I got her a lady bug costume from ebay and make a lady bug cake. There are lots of lady bug crafts on orientaltrading.com that are fun to make and give away as favors if you want to do that sort of thing.

Mostly your kid will not remember so do something fun to show her when she is older. What does your baby react to. Animals, puppets etc build a theme around that and invite some kids 1-2.

we did a winnie the pooh theme for my girl and individual cupcakes for everyone, its mostly for you and your friends since they don't care about anything but cake and presents!
pick your childs favorite character and make it as fun as you want it.
