It's supposed to represent the sound a cat makes -- like the Japanese equivalent of "Meow," or, more closely, "Mew."

It's also used in DiGi Charat, as Nyu and Nyo.

I guess it comes from the word "ny" which in Japanese means 2.

It's the Japanese word for 'Mew', and is meant ot be a cute way of saying 'Mew' or 'Meow'
