I'm not sure what operating system you are using, but if it's XP you can also try going into My Computer, C Drive, Document and Settings, Owner, Local Settings, History and deleting the files that way.

Not knowing what type of PC you are using or operating system makes it difficult to give you a different answer from the one you were given...while in your browser window, hitting Tools, hitting Internet Options and then putting in the number of days to keep your history. For example, I've never used a Mac so the info would probably be different for that type of computer.

You can set the days to ZERO (0) so there won't be any History

Your question does not make clear what kind of history you are talking about.
But I assume you mean your surfing history.
