A friend of mine made for another friend, a whole little tye-dyed outfit, the sleeper, hat, mitts, socks... it was SO cute on the baby once she was born. Not to many babies in pink tye-dye but it was SOOOO precious. She started with little pink stuff and dyed with barbie pink.
I gave a friend from university a blanket with our university logo on it, she loved it.
Spend money on a share in a good company and give her that... if it grows its something that will REALLY stand out!
Good luck, I hope i might have inspired your creative juices.
Oh yes, I just got a shower invitation this week, it had a list of registered and non-registered items. One thing they asked for was a small tree... I just saw some at Home Depot, planted, for like $25....

I always go to Sam's and get a case of the Sam's brand diapers and a case of diaper wipes as a shower or baby gift. It is a gift that can not only be used but, will be used a lot! Anytime I have given this it has been well received and much appreciated.
Even though others may give little packages of diaper I have never been to a shower where anyone else gave a case of diapers and wipes. Cost is around $30 for both if you get the Sam's brand which is a better diaper than the Huggies.
Then if the person is really close to you, you can always buy an outfit after the baby arrives if you feel you need to.
P.S. I never buy newborns since they outgrow those so fast. I always buy the next size up.

I don't know how far along your friend is, but unless she's had a 3-D ultrasound, the sex isn't a guarantee. *lol* So try to avoid "girl" colors. Go more neutral. Personally I say, everyone forgets about the mom during her pregnancy. She becomes a non-entity, just a carrier.
So with my friends, I always go the practical route for the baby--diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, Johnson/Baby Magic gift set with shampoo and all that.
But I go the extra step and get a gift set for mom. Maybe something from Victoria's Secret or Bath and Body that will encourage her to relax and de-stress AFTER the baby is born. Because right after birth, she won't feel sexy or desirable. She'll feel grotty and sometimes, a nice shower and smelling like your old self can make all the difference in the world.
Most folks won't think to do anything for her. That's what will make you stand out.

I love a basket of books. If you want to spend $30, you could get a ton of books on amazon - and then have them sent directly to the house. That way you wouldn't have to carry them. Studies show that children who are exposed to books from a young age and hear rhymes (as in Dr. Seuss) learn how to read more easily than those who are not exposed.
Board books are great - and some must have for any little baby are
Mr. Brown Can Moo
One fish Two Fish
Good Night Moon
Pat the Bunny
Moo Baa La La La

If you cannot attend the party a good giftcertifcate to Babiesrus.com is a good bet. A nice 9 month-12 month outfit is always nice. If you have a lot of money and it is family I would spring for the fancy "Moses basket" that they sell in high end stores or a jogging stroller that has swelving front wheel. If funds are a issue you can give a little treasure bond that will appreciate over the years. Also a great little gift is the book, BABY SIGNS which teach babies how to sign.

Gift cards or gift certificate, atleast you dont have to worry about getting the wrong gift or other people would give the same thing. 30 dollars would go a long way. They can get what they need or want for the baby.

How about a diaper cake? Or something else you might do is get some baby items such as lotion, shampoo, conditioner, nail clipper etc and put them in something nice for the mama. You can also include baby coupons for things for the baby. And a couple of gift certificates for the mommy and daddy.

Everyone always buys clothes. If you do get clothes buy at least a size 6-9mo. If you want to be different and get the other important things on the list like bottles, binkies, shampoo, lotion, etc. put them in a basket or hamper that can be used later. My favorite thing to top off any present with is a binkie holder. They can be found in the binkie isle. If i didn't have mine i would have had one unhappy little boy. And a rediculous binkie bill.

Get a nice square basket....an inexpensive one that is lined (about $5.00-$7.00). Fill it with baby powder, diaper cream, rattle toys, baby bath, a hooded towel, and a small package of diapers! The basket will be a great thing to keep in the parent's room for changes in there (or the living room). Plus you can never have TOO MUCH of any of that stuff!
Practical, sweet, cute....and it shows effort. I think they would like that!

Get a small plastic bin (useful later) and fill it with "neccessities". For example, rash cream, bottle brush, baby bath soap, wipes, medicine dispenser, binkys, and a dishwasher basket for little bottle and sippy cup parts. Those are the useful things I appreciated getting. Diapers are always a hit too! Get size 1 since newborn is grown out of so quickly. Don't go the clothes/socks/shoes route since everyone gets the baby whatever their taste is, and the mom usually doesn't put half the stuff on the baby anyway.
