Responsibility (both personal and community), Manners, Tact, Decision Making Skills (how well did "Just Say NO" work?).

What's really missing in education now is fun. Kids aren't allowed to be kids anymore. Any extra activities like art have been forced out of the school day in lieu of testing deadlines and curriculum guidelines.

I agree with rokdude5 that the most important thing missing from education is wisdom. We are taught lots of lessons and knowledge, but we may never know how to use those knowledge. As a result, we become 'paralyzed' (excuse me, I do NOT mean to be offending those who are in less fortunate physical condition, but I just want to describe how useless is our knowledge without capabilities to use it). We do not know where to go. If you ask university graduates about their life goals, how many of them will answer you with a clear answer? Most of them will answer you,"I do not know." Twenty years later, they will be mediocre persons, if not losers. Of course wisdom cannot be fully taught in classrooms, because it is a life skill. It needs hands-on training. But why not highlighting basic rules of wisdom in classrooms?

There's a lot that should be taught and isn't. Definetly etiquette! I also think they should be teaching kids morals, not particularly religious morals, but guiding principles for life (good versus bad). We need to teach them appropriate social conduct; we throw 30 students in a class together and expect them to get along. Most adults cant even do that! We need to teach them patriotism, philanthropy and good citizenship. I think the list would be very long if you actually sat down and thought about it!

What's missing from education? Getting kids to be able to master even the basics. Reading, writing, arithmetic, etc. I'd be happy if teachers could graduate students who could meet even the mediocre standards of what education for their grade level required once upon a time.

Actually, the courses that ARE taught don't seem to be as effective as they used to be. For example, I learned English and I never forgot how to use an apostrophe. If you can't even get the basics right, etiquette and confidence seem to me to be pretty lofty ideals in the face of rampant illiteracy.

What is missing is time for teachers to teach. I don't think that there is any real subject matter that is missing, but there have been so many laws and mandates passed and tests to be taken that teachers are scrambling to find time to actually teach the curriculum.

What is missing is this: math, science, social studies, reading, and writing. These should be taught but aren't because we have to "teach to the test."

LIFE SKILLS!
My mom is an econ teacher and she has classes where she teaches "life skills", like how to balance a checkbook (I realize you don't have to do this so much anymore with the advent of online banking, but not everyone has the internet accessible to them), or how to do your taxes.
And I definitely think all kids should take a manners/ettiquette class with their parents, because the parents are just as bad as the kids, sometimes worse.

A whole lot. How to raise children. How to be happily married and stay married. Yes, money magement. How to communicate effectively. How to treat others. When you think about it; the schools teach a lot that we don't need to know. No wander we have problems.
