Every new computer has a sound card...
Goto the Apple website and upload the iTune updates, and while you are at it upload all the updates for your laptop, this should fix your problems. If it doesn't, then throw that piece of apple garbage where it belongs and us a different MP3 player.

a sound card is a chip connected to the port where you plug the speakes microphone & input line.
the downloads may have had a virus and ruined your sound card BUT it's very unlikly.
Either way try reistalling the drivers for it, find out the name & type of sound card using DEVICE MANAGER (use [my computer] properties, then click manage tab)
Then if you dont have thre driver you can dwnload it from the web, @ the worst look in a computer shop and buy a new one for aroud £5-15!!!
GD luck!!!

Click "start" "control panel" "sounds" click the audio tab, make sure your playback is set to your sound card, reboot. (the VIA is the onboard sound).
If that dont work go back to the control panel, click system, then Hardware, And Device manager click sounds and video controlers), and then click your sound card, Click update driver, If that dont find anything, Check the add and remove programs for your sound card program, (sometimes there is not one, sometimes there is). and uninstall it, then go back to the Device manager and click the sounds and then the sound card and right click and uninstall. then reboot..

read all the stuff that you told the people who had already answered, and one of those things, towards the bottom was, this is a new laptop, or something of that nature.
If you tell us pertinent information of that kind, when you ASK your questions, you will usually get faster and better responses. We want to help you, but, if you don't tell us a lot of info upfront, it's more difficult to do so.

Well, first off, you may need to update the driver for your sound card, to do that, go to the manufactures website and see what they have available

Another fix is to remove Quicktime from your computer, then redownload it from Apple. My iTunes wouldn't even open after I downloaded 7.1, but that's what Apple said to do to fix the problem and it worked.
