Typical short-horned grasshoppers are all phytophagous, meaning they eat plants exclusively. Whereas the long horned grasshoppers (crickets and katydids) are omnivorous and will eat plants, tiny insects and things like their own molted skin (Evuvia) or even carrion or dead insects.

Hope this helps!

Different kinds of grasshoppers eat different things. They usually eat grasses and plants.

Some examples:
native grasses and sedge (brown-spotted range grasshopper)
cereal crops and grasses (clear-winged grasshopper)
western wheat grass, needle and thread grass, and other grasses (lub-horned grasshopper)

Grasshoppers usually live in grassy fields. They are herbivores; they feed exclusively on plant materials.

Just about any plant that grows. The more there are, the hungrier they are, and the less picky they are. They can sample your petunias or wipe out an entire region's farm crops depending on their numbers.
