For the most part, we know who we are at the core. Others know define us by what they see, the physical object, your actions in the past, how you deal with people, and so on...
Everyone goes through this stage, although for some it is far more difficult due to the dissonance between the physical self and the emotional self. For others it could be as simple as wanting to be free but are under the control of significant others-- can even be one's own parent.
Whatever the situation is, choose to be yourself. Don't go through life living as what other people define you. This is your life, you have the right to be yourself, to be happy... Whatever choices you make, remember to picture yourself at the end of your life and ask yourself, have I lived my life the best way I can...

Why? If you have problems with self image, you can hardly blame others for it. Be secure in who and what you are...the world is a much better place when you are at peace with yourself. If you fall for the bull that others hand out, if you are so sensitive as to be hurt by ignorant people, you need to look inward and correct your failings. You don't have the time or knowledge to worry about their problems. Good luck

Not after a while or a certain age in your life it's not. When you genuinely no longer care what people think of you, then you can relax and be whatever/whoever you want to be.
