Go Start, Control Panel, Performance & maintenance, System, Device manager and look for Network Adapters on the list. Most laptops already has a built-in wireless adapter. You can also look in the back of your laptop to see if it has an ethernet port and you'll know.

a laptop will have a switch at its base and once you flick it, some sort of light should switch on. that SHOULD mean that you have one. otherwise click on the two computers in the toolbar and click diagnose. it will tell you. This works on vista. i dont know about XP sorry.

This will tell you all hardware and software, even if your hotfixes have failed and how to re install them. It will even give you all software versions and license keys.
