To be dropped from your work position to a lower position without reasonable cause?

Sure, yet you probably saw it coming. It is called being demoted. Consider it better than being fired. If you cannot live with it then your primary option is to quit.

If you think you were treated totally unfair and illegally then discuss your case with an employment lawyer.

It depends on where you live.

In the US, it is almost universally legal since most states have "right to work" laws, meaning that it is a contract at will between the employer and employee. (That means it can be terminated or renogiated at any time for almost any reason by either party, even without any notice.)

There are some situations where this might not be true, such as in the case of a unionized workforce. However, I suspect you'd already have gone screaming to the union leaders if that was the case in this situation.

There are also some specific circumstances where it could be illegal to demote someone; however, you would have to prove discrimination of some type in order for those to apply.

Yes, it is legal, but you can find out for sure for your own satisfaction and call the state board that handles such things. The co. you work for, no doubt will make it sound reasonable. Call the employment office and find out from them who you should speak to about this! I am sure the co will give you an alternative of take it or lose it! Your decision. But if I was you, I would take it and then start looking around. You will just be miserable and resent the fact of what they did. Just keep your mouth shut till you find another job. Perhaps it is time for you to move on to better things anyway. Good luck!

Yes. Just liked you can get hired and fired and quit all for no reason. It sucks and if that happened to you then I am sorry.
