Interesting question.
I agree with the current policy of not having a superstar team, but trying to construct a team with specific role players around the core group.
I would have:
Kobe Bryant
Lebron James
Dwayne Wade
Dwight Howard
Chris Bosh
Shawn Marion
Shane Battier
Carlos Boozer
Ray Allen
Chris Paul
Deron Williams
Chauncey Billups
A mix of youth & veterans, with players that would be excellent support for the core group.

everyone has posted pretty good responses to this question. the problem for me though, is as i try to assemble my team together, i keep thinking about leaving out WORLD CLASS players. should i not pick a superstar in the team and instead put in good solid role players? its really a hard decision. the first dream team was full of superstars and at the time the world wasnt ready for them. now USA puts up their best players and the world IS ready for them....ill put together my team here of players...most superstars...but im really considering leaving some out in place for role players...
C - Amare Stoudamire
C - Dwight Howard
PF - Tim Duncan
PF - Kevin Garnett or Chris Bosh
SF - Lebron James
SF - T Mac or Carmello
SG - Kobe Bryant
SG - Dwayne Wade
PG - Chris Paul/Kirk Hinrich/Deron Williams
PG - Jason Kidd/Billups
UTILITY - Ray Allen/Jason Kapono/Gilbert Arenas/Michael Redd
UTILITY - Shane Battier/Luke Walton/David Lee
do too many superstars spoil things out there? Would it be best having a team with a do it all player like Luke Walton playing the SF, a solid double double player like David Lee playing PF and then players like Lebron, Kidd and Stoudamire manning the other 3 spots.....????
basically the USA Dream Team needs athletic players, big players, players who can hit the internationl 3, and players who can make the sacrifices for the good of the team....role players who know that for 8 minutes they have to rebound, defend and hussle. that will win them the gold!!!!

You will need a team that can run and shoot as well as defense! The team should also have some young players for more energy as well as some tall timbers to handle the international taller players like Yao.
PG: Jason Kidd (Mr triple double), Gilbert Arenas(Can shoot and run), Monta Ellis (Someone young and decent in case of injury).
SG: Ray Allen (sharp shooter), Kobe Bryant (Need some wow- factor), Josh Smith (Great defender - use as role player)
SF: Lebron James (Future MVP), Shawn Marion (shooting well and playing an all round game), Kyle Korver (Shooter and great off the bench!)
PF: KG (Amazing player), Dwight Howard (powerful), Al Jefferson (Young and great at rebound)
C: Amare Stoudamire (fast center and can D), Tim Duncan (Fundamental!), Tyson Chandler (block shoot and rebound)

D-Wade, Lebron James, Ron Artest (believe it or not, because of his versatility and he can actually play defense and enjoys playing defense unlike Carmello Anthony, who on more than one occasion in the summer games, stood motionless in the paint while watching European guards shoot wide open 3s), Dwight Howard at power forward, and Shaquille O'Neal would be my starting five. My bench would be Chauncey Billups, Ray Allen instead of Joe Johnson, Vince Carter, Carloz Boozer, and Tim Duncan. I picked Ray Allen because of his experience. Joe Johnson missed a lot of easy open looks at the summer games maybe due to nerves. I picked Boozer over Brand just because I think he brings a little more height and strength to defend and rebound better against those big European post players. That is 10 players. I can't leave out Amare Stoudemire. And if you ever need quick points in a flurry, why not have Kobe. I love his competetive fire. But follow through on your shot, stop hitting guys in the face, good grief! I don't think there is anyone in Europe that can defend him though. Kirk Hinrick choked in the summer games (Against Greece, he traveled, drew an up and down viloation on a wide open 3-point attempt, and air balled another 3-pointer) all crucial possessions that allowed Greece to get momentum and climb back from a double digit defecit) Even though he is great, but I don't think he has the maturity right now to lead us to gold. Not to take anything away from Greece, they played the game of their life and over achieved, but I gaurentee, we won't be making bonehead plays this year. USA will win gold!!!

Sunny and Malice, beautiful lineups. Much props to you sunny for recognizing Tyson Chandler. He has been one of the most exciting players to watch this season in my opinion. I am admittedly a Horntes fan, but nevertheless, him and Chris Paul work so well together. I just wanted to give props to good lineups.
