a patent attorney will (supposedly) help you to make it so that no one else CAN steal your idea.
Before you share your idea with him, tell him that you have one and that you want to discuss what he will do with it.
DO NOT TELL HIM THE IDEA if you feel at all uncomfortable.....
IN the meantime BEFORE YOu go and meet with him,
mail yourself a couple (five should do the trick) certified letters that are NOTARIZED with the idea inside...when they arrive, do NOT open them.
This will give you proof should you need it, that the idea was yours FIRST!

Be sure to also record the day that you met with this attorney. Snag a card while you are in his office and put the date and time on the back of it. Just in case....

keep in mind that patent attorney's are VERY expensive, if your idea is a good one, they will get a nice cut.
work out in advance what that cut should be.

I think that you are referring to a Patent. Yes, for a patent, you will need a lawyer. Although, you can file for a Provisional Patent which is cheaper and allows you to file for a full patent within a year. You will need a lawyer to file for provisional patent.

You must mean, Patent Attorney.

If you have invented something then you would need a patent attorney to assure your claim is properly registered. You can ask around for a reputable one in your area.
