Check out Dropkick Murphys and Rancid. And don't ignore old school punk - Clash, Pistols, Ramones, Siouxsie, Buzzcocks, etc.
In what would probably fall into the "alternative" category, one of my current faves is Scarling. Kind of a shoegazer-ish sound with vocals from Jessicka (ex-Jack off Jill singer).
I'd also recommend the Jesus and Mary Chain (recently reunited and playing Coachella this year). Highly influential and often overlooked. Here's hoping for a new album to go with the recently remastered ones.
Would also suggest the Smiths as essential "classic" alternative listening, but people either love or hate Morrissey. My fave is How Soon is Now... can't remember all of the bands who have covered it or sampled Johnny Marr's opening guitar....
