we are going to visit my boyfriends grandpa who lives near fort worth. (we are coming from kentucky) last summer we drove down to the beach from there and it was just too far to do so much driving. he wants to see the desert, but i think we would probably have to drive about 10 hours west to see anything like he is looking for. So are there any areas (scenic) that would be interesting to visit that wont take us very long to get to? To give you an idea of what he is hoping for... he wants to see sights like what you might see at the grand canyon, or arizona mountains... that red, rocky desert area. Is there anything close to fort worth that looks like that?

No, not really. Fort worth is in a large flat semiarid desert, but if you get out of the urban area, it is just flat sand and scrubby trees. Oklahoma has some nice forest area and Native American culture/education. Fort worth has old west/cowboys in the stockyards, but the great desert vistas are much further to the west and south. I think that you are about right on the 10 hour estimate, but i have never been much of a fan of going where the armadillos run free. You might check into Southwest airlines and see if there is a cheap flight to where you might wish to go and do a rent car, if it is in your budget. For some short hops SW Air is cheaper then driving and flys out of love field Dallas. You could go and come back on the same day, take public transport to the airport, and not have to pay for the motel. Good Luck.
