It stands for Massively Multiplayer Online although I believe the original term was MMORPG, which stood for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.

As it stands today, most MMOs are still Role Playing Games (RPG), which means that you log on to the game, and build up your character through various tasks or actions.

What's different about MMOs from traditional RPGs are that you can interact online with hundreds or thousands of other human players, rather than just interacting with the computer generated characters.

Massive Multiplayer Online is what MMO means. In Massive Multiplayer Online games there are many other players that will be online.
