If you think you are going to Manhattan, but want a stop on the way because you like history, take Highway 15 to Abilene. If you like history, the Eisenhower Museum is awesome--and not too far from Wichita. The town has some nice bed and breakfast homes where you could relax in style. You can also take a tour of several lovely mansions there--including the Seeley mansion on Buckeye --Abilene's major street. You could treat yourself to a nice meal at the Kirby House Restaurant or the Brookville Hotel on the north side of town that is famous for its fried chicken dinners. (yum!)--but this restaurant is closed on Mondays... There are some wonderful antique stores on Buckeye, also.
