When it says "Do not Disconnect" it's telling you that computer communications are taking place. If you disconnect the music or other data being transferred will be corrupted. This means that the computer will not be able to process the stuff you just tied to load and it will start screwing up. Just wait til it gets done doing what it needs to do. Then it will say "OK to Disconnect"

Because it's charging/uploading music. To disconnect, there should be an icon on he bottom of your screen, by the clock that says 'Safely Remove Hardware' or something to that effect, click that and follow instructions to disconnect your iPod with the least chance of problems.

That just means that you shouldn't disconnect it while it is charging. If you want to disconnect it safely, click the eject icon in ITunes next to where it shows your IPod to the side of the Itunes window.

When it's connected to your computer, it will always say that. It's a security measure to keep you from improperly disconnecting it when you shouldn't.
If you unmount the iPod from iTunes, or right click on the USB device icon in the taskbar and select "Safely Remove Devices", you can disconnect it that way.
There's nothing wrong with your iPod.

Its supposed to do that. To eject it from the system(make it safe to unplug) hit that little button on the iTunes screen next to the ipod icon.

Firsthand experience, mine did that for a long time, over an hour, and then my computer finally recognized it so i could eject it by clicking on the eject button in itunes's window.

It's either still charging or trying to sync with the computer. Have you installed itunes yet?
