it depends on the country location and in which government or private sectors to choose from..
generally, the government sector offers the best benefits, so you get a pretty nice insurance and security benefits compared to the private sector. although, private sectors offer a competitive edge if they are large corporations.
in the philippines, the government sector offers better benefits than that of the private, but you get to be exposed on political warfares, graft and corruption. and frankly, i learn a lot from the private sector, being in the government makes me idle..

Government jobs are usually more stable (less likely to be laid off) and have excellent benefits. Salary and mobility is dependent on what type of job you have and what pay system you fall under. For example, moving up through the GS pay system can be slow but the newer National Personnel Security System (NSPS), which is DoD's pay system, works more like private sector.

My preference as a husband with a family who isn't so young anymore. The Government Job is a great gig if you can get it. The bennies make it worth it.
That said, the money isn't usually as good and not as much upward mobility.
