Darwin spent five years travelling around the world on the British Navy ship HMS Beagle. His most famous stop was at the Galapagos Islands where he noticed some unusual birds. He wasn't too good at bird recognition so he didnt know what kind they were. After he got back to England he took them to a bird specialist and they worked out that they were Finches.

He also stopped at the Canary islands, and at the islands of Tierra del Fuego, as well as others. When he got back he wrote a book about the trip. He spent a lot of time (years) talking to other biologists about everything he had seen. Some suggested that he should pick a subject and study up on it so that he would understand biology better, so he chose barnacles and he became the world expert on barnacles. Afterwards he said he wished he had picked something more interesting, because he was really sick of looking at barnacles! hahahah!

Darwin read Malthus' book and others and he developed his theory of natural selection based on his observations of thousands of different animals and plants. This theory is now acccepted by biologists all over the world as one of the fundamental cornerstones of biology,

Darwin concluded his studies in England. As a young man he went to the Galapagos Islands, but most of his studies were done after he returned home.

Darwin studied all nature on the Galapagos Islands, but unfortunately did not record which islands the sample of finches he caught came from, so he was unable to use them in his study of evolution. Most of his work was done by studying barnacles.

He studied finches in the Galapagos Islands (although he did not have the insight about the significance of the variations until after he left the islands)
