There are two reasons to start: First because of mad abuse, and the second is for attention/popularity. The negative of all of this, is that cutting releases endorphins which makes it very addictive. Once you start, it is quite hard to stop.

Think of it this way, if you were to take a razor and try to cut yourself, you would be in pain because it hurts! A person who is deeply depressed can do it easily, because they don't care about the pain, they are desperate for something to make them feel happy again. The more blood they spill, the better they feel.

It used to be an actual disease, by the way, but in the last 5 years it has become associated with "emo" and people have started doing it to be cool. Although it is still addictive once you start, if you start because of this, it will hurt, like any other person would, the first 5 or 6 times, but eventually you crave the rush and don't feel it anymore.

First of all no, they don't want to kill themselves, so they slit themselves open, that's an ignorant comment to make, so you should definetely think before you speak. Personally I've never cut, but I've had a lot of close friends and even family members who've done so. When I asked them why they did it, they all came to a unified answer, they said it was a way of releasing pain, the one way they could control how they release all the pain they feel inside. I am not saying everyone does it for the same reason, but many people who cut, will answer something similar, a way of releasing pain. Though it's extremely dangerous, judging them won't help. But being there for them, and understanding that it takes more than a friend to help them out, drives them closer to a cure.

Cutting ones self helps you not to feel the emotional pain that one is feeling... It brings it out to a physical pain, so it makes a person feel like they don't have the pain inside... Cutting also releases endorphins, and endorphins make you feel good...
It isn't something that is easily understood by someone who is not a cutter... People don't get it, and that is why most people who do cut will hide it from the rest of the world... It's funny though because the scars are like a badge of Honor...
it doesn't make sense to someone who does not do it, and truthfully it does not make sense to those who do either... I am not saying that it is a good thing, but there are much worse things that someone could be doing...

There are a variety of reasons why people cut themselves. I knew a few people who did and they only did it for attention. They felt that they were having the most terrible life ever, and so they decided to try and receive attention by cutting their arms (it didn't work). Secondly, people do it because they are in so much emotional pain that they cut themselves so that they can actually feel something else that's more painful than what they are going through. It's stupid, but it's true....and it does happen.

I used to be a cutter myself when i was 17-20 (i am 27 now)and it was an outlet for pain. I was sexually abused as a child by my grandfather and it was a control thing for me. I got to control how deep i went and i got to control the pain. I am not proud of it and now my scars are almost healed. Unless u have been a cutter u can never really understand why and it is hard to make people understand why cuz all they do is judge u and think u are crazy and nuts for doing it.

My sister inlaw was doing it for attention. She was home schooled, 18 and off to college on the other side of the US. I think things got overwhelming for her and she did not know how to handle it. SHe posted on her myspace that she was cutting herself..knowing her parents read it and most of the family read it. When she came home for the summer, she left a tin out on her dresser with needles, bandaids and razors right out where anyone could see it knowing that her mom came in her room everyday to clean her room up. The family had an intervention and she was almost kicked out of school. Instead of feeling sorry for her we gave her tough love. She is now graduationg colleg in 2 months at age 21, preg and will be married in a few days. SHe turned her life around

It takes the emotial pain that they are feeling and turn it into something that is more manageable. Some people can turn off there pain recepters so cutting them selves doesnt hurt... it makes it easier to deal with issues that they are emotically able to cope with. Its dangerous because you could cut a vain and die or get infected. Its not the best way to deal with an issue...

They cut themselves because it's like a vent for emotional pain - it's like standing with your back to the wall, running away isn't an option, staying isn't an option, killing yourself isn't either, not even talking - but you need some vent for the pain, or you feel, you'll suffocate from it - than you cut.
A lot of people cut only in extremely stressful situations.
