do you think you actually have to follow a program in order to jump higher or you could just play basketball all day, and go to the weight room to squat and leg presses, etc.. like 2 times a week or so?

The squats and leg presses twice a week are the real reason you'll be jumping higher. But you'll have to keep doing it on a regular basis or you'll be "earthbound" again very soon.

NBA players have various types of training in order to increase their vertical leaping ability. First, there are the platform shoes. These specially-devised shoes trigger the calf muscles when worn. They will help your limbs get used to jumping. It develops a fast twitch reaction in your leg muscles. These shoes have instructions together with the package. Examples of these shoes are the Jumpsoles and the Springbak Soles. Another type of training is by following training manuals. These manuals have exercises for you to increase your leaping ability. They include the time intervals, number of reps, and the number of sets in an exercise. Some examples of these are the Dunknow program, Air Alert I, II, and III. Follow the links below. Good luck!
