A better question is how does crime relate to cost?
A poor person in the lower class commits a crime because the only price he pays is a relocation of residence, and maybe better food, a gym to workout in, a crap load of friends, enemies that aren't afraid to kill him or kill for him, his voting rights, and a guilty conscience. His freedom to move about as he pleases was already limited by his poverty and so being in prison isn't much different than being poor. So he has little to no cost. While a rich person has a lot more to loose.. his career, his home, his family (he can more easily have a family because he can support them), his cars, his reputation, and all of his future wealth he would have acquired if he wasn't caught.

Re violent crime?
I think poverty stems from a lack of education. Lack of education results in unemployment & a higher crime rate. My guess is that more crime is committed amongst those living at or below the poverty level.

I once read a study that most poor people do not think that education is a priority & that they don't understand that it is a way out of the life of poverty.

I'd have to say that there would be a lot of crime in people who have no money for food, clothing, shoes, etc.

Don't forget about white-collar crime, though. These people are embezzling all kinds of money--much more so than people taking some food or clothing.

Well, Poverty is a huge cause of crime, like drug dealing, B & E, that sort of thing. However, White collar crime is huge with people who aren't stealing because they can't eat or pay their rent if you know what I mean--stuff like computer fraud, bank fraud, that stems from pure greed rather than necessity.
