The Flemish live in Belgium and speak a Germanic language similar to Dutch. In terms of immigration the first Flemish settlers arrived in North America in the pursuit of religious freedom. King Henry, after being deposed from the throne during the religious wars, instigated and led the resettlement of non-conformist Flemish people in North America in an area that is nowadays Annapolis, Maryland. This took place in 1134. The colony's existence was short-lived, as a result of poor harvests, cholera, and continual attacks by the Patuxent, a now extinct Native American tribe. King Henry, himself, died from blood poisoning after an arrow wound became infected. The surviving colonists were rescued by passing Portuguese mariners in 1154, and were disembarked in Oporto. A monument to the colonists is displayed in Oporto's City Park.
