Europe: Germany, ie Hitler's regime, wanted to ultimately, engage and defeat the Soviet Union for "Lebensraum" literally "living room" in the eastern part of Europe. To this end, they originally offered a deal as late as March 1938 to Poland to allow German troops to transit-also to give the Poles a slice of Soviet territory. When they refused, Hitler gave the go-ahead to plan the invasion of Poland. For the West, after Germany occupied all of Czechoslovakia, UK and France finally realized that only war would stop Hitler. They subsequently gave a guarantee to Poland.
This actually gave Hitler pause, and his advisors (primarily Goering and Papen) assured him the West wouldn't interfere with his plans.
The Germans, citing Polish provocations, invaded Poland on 1 Sept 1939. After three days of prevarication, the UK and France declared war on 3 Sept 1939. Italy declared itself neutral-one of the few astute moves Mussolini made at this time.
Asia: Japan, feeling the need for the Indonesian oilfields, began threatening US interests in the Pacific. On 7 Dec (* dec in Japan/PI) 1941, they attacked the US fleet in Hawaii. Simultaneously they attacked US forces in the Philippines and invaded Wake Island and Guam.

The Japanese had already been at war with China since 1938, and they'd had a very short war with Russia. After the invasion of Poland, they declared war on Britain and France as well. Italy declared war on France and Britain so they could attack their African holdings shortly after those nations had declared war on Germany.

Germany easily conquered France in the summer of 1940. They spent quite a bit of time trying to soften up England. But instead they decided to invade Russia in 1941. Initially they had huge success.

Before WWII, the aggressive Third Reich led by Adolf Hitler annexed Austria and Czechoslovakia. The great powers France and Great Britain just watched and stood by as Germany annexed Austria, while they also acceded to Hitler's demands (Munich agreement) that Sudetenland (a forested mountainous area in border of Czechoslovakia with Germany) be ceded to Germany.
