I just purchased a new retail Seagate ata 100 internal drive and was wondering if I can install myself and was wondering how I can determine if this type of hard drive is compatible with my computer or not. Is there a way to detect? It would be helpful to know before I open the package...thanks!

Some older computers will not take a larger hard drive. The only way you will find out is to try it yourself. You will have to make sure that the jumpers are set correctly. Some master(main) hard drives have to be set to master, and some have to be set as master with slave present. You will also have to make sure you have a dual hard drive ribbon. The main hard drive will go at the end of the ribbon (the end closest to the center connection) The slave will then go to the center connection with its jumper set to slave. Make sure to locate the red line on the edge of the ribbon, this will go toward the power connection side(the 4 prong molex plug).

Jumper settings are different for each drive and are located on each drive.
If all goes well and you have XP, your computer will set the drive up.
I recommend you then right click on "My Computer" and go to "Manage", then to "Disk Management", since this will probably be your second drive, you will have to format it.
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT FORMAT DISK 0.
If you only have 2 disks you will be formatting disk 1.
Just right click on disk 1 and format, UNLESS there is something on the drive you want first. After formatting, right click and mark partition as active.
Running XP you can use any drive over 120Gb. if the computer will recognize it.
Whenever you start adding more drives and extras to any computer, its a good idea to upgrade a higher wattage power supply. A good rule is to never add more than you have power plugs for. I recommend you always have one empty. The higher the watts on a power supply, the more plugs it will have. A 600W power supply will have 8 molex plugs.

Its simple. Just make sure the power is turned off. There are only2 connections needed for the harddisk. ONe for the power suppply and another for data transfer. Im sure there is another Harddisk inside the cpu,so u can refer to that for the connections. Detection is plug and play.
