I have never planted in red clay before, but from everything I have read, you will be wise to amend the soil by adding compost, manure and top soil.

This be said, here is regional forum for Georgia gardeners, there are many suggestions about the red clay issue. You may want to ask some experienced "red Clay" gardeners for advice.

This website is a blog about red clay gardening, if anything, it should give you some ideas:

Red Clay Huh ?

The first thing that I would do.... build raised beds..... find some good soil, river bed soil, or mulch and construct some good raised beds... you can find most materials around... cinder blocks, 2 x 6's or rocks... construct the bed and then plant some good flowers, veggies and fruit....
