I guess the general sentiment is that there are lots of people with opinions, but only a few with talk shows. So the callers are offering the host a basically replaceable standpoint, whereas the host is offering the callers the chance to make their voices heard on air. The latter is considered a bigger boon.

Regardless, I usually hear the host say "Thank you for calling" as well as the caller return the thanks for having them on the show. It's just basic courtesy.

I sincerely believe that both parties should thank each other. The host should thank the caller for participating on the show and the caller for the invitation to air their views or being entertained on the show.
