Yes,absolutely,I did,I think its the best way to learn.Believe me,when you start learning chords you will soon realize its not as easy as you might think. That being said it shouldnt discourage you. You'll know when your ready for an electric.

Hey there,

Looks like you're getting a load of advice on this one! Take everyones opinions with a grain of salt, sure there are good things about electric and there are good things about acoustic (I own several of both) but at the end of the day it is totally up to you.

In your situation, not that I know you anymore that what you've written about, I would recommend getting two guitars. Get ones that look cool, because if you're rich and you're not a full on guitarist you will hardly notice the difference between a $200 starter pack guitar and a $6,000 high end model.

Once you have the guitars do the same practise on both of them and start to figure out the parts you like doing on one of them more than the other. You might like to improvise (solo) on the electric over the acoustic, and you might enjoy playing rhythm on the acoustic and not the electric.

Bottom line is, get something that looks cool and you're comfortable with and be aware that once you learn how to play guitar you'll want to upgrade to different sounding guitars.

Experience comes with time, so take care and good luck.

its a little harder to press on the strings of an acoustics to produce sounds. i would buy the cheapest electric guitar you can and then the cheapest amp... thinking that you wanna play guitar and learning guitar are not what you probably expect. my mom wanted to learn (shes got little hands) so i bought her a kids size acoustic (she didn't want an electric) i gave her some basic finger exercises, she complained that it hurt her fingers (but calluses are the first step) pain is short you have to train your hand and fingers. keep in mind that electric/acoustic are not better than one another, each has its own charm. good luck (give it a month, practice every day for at least a half an hour.)

I'm sorry but, acoustic guitars are usually HARDER to play not easier. Electric guitars usually have much lighter guage strings making them much easier to play. Learn banjo so you can learn guitar? That's like saying learn the tuba so you can play piano. If you want to learn guitar, get a guitar.

Be kind to those around you... get an electric and some headphones.. it is easier to record and play back too ...

but if you are going places with no electricity.. you definitely need acoustic.

no, electric is cooler. well, maybe, it depends on what kind of music u like. if u like rock, good riffs, metal etc start with electric. if u just wanna mess around or do mellow stuff do acoustic.

It really doesn't matter what kind of guitar you start with. Make sure you start with 10 gage strings to develop your fret hand, and get really comfortable play it. The rest works itself out.

you can, a lot of people do it that way, but they do play differently. more finger pressure is required for an accoustic. but you can just learn on an electric, too. if you dont learn accoustic first, tho, you might not go back and learn it that well. or you might. just depends on your level of interest.
