I heard np's have it great because they have a high degree of autonomy, can write prescriptions, are well-paid, and are needed pretty much everywhere (as you mentioned). My aunt is an np, and she says it's the closest thing to being a doc without going to medical school or doing osteopathy. I'm not sure a medical lab job has as many perks, especially if you're a people person...

Nurse practitioners work with people more, lab jobs you will have less human contact. The question is would you rather work with and see results in the people or would you rather figure out a problem in a lab. What I am asking is are you a people person? Good luck with what you choose, both are admirable careers.

I work in a small but very busy family practice office and we have both CNP and nurse/lab ...in our practice the nurse has very much contact with the patients. She does some pre-workup on the patients first so is in contact with them.
Her salary though would not be a good as the NP. The NP says there is a lot not taught in her classes and they don't teach about all the medicines.
With either field it will take a lot of work, but good luck on your choice

I would go with nurse practioner myself, but then again I work in healthcare as a state tested nurses aide, so I am a lil partial, but I once saw a nurse practioner on a regular basis and it was just like seeing the doc, so it's about as close to being a doc as you can come without being a doc!

it depends on whether or not you are a people person. if you like people and have a good beside manner go for nurse practiioner, if you would do better in a lab away from patients, do the lab thing.
