there are several types:
electric point of use
electric storage tank type submerged element
electric storage tank dry element

Gas tankless

gas storage tank type standard

gas storage tank type mobile home rated OT rated for outside alcove installation

gas storage tank type mobile home rated DV for inside access alcove

combination boiler systems with water heating coil

and others not so commonly found.

they do not function properly if there is a leak in the hot water side or if the water is trickled to prevent frozen pipes.

in an electric it is possible for the element to be damaged by sediment to the point that when the thermostat kicks out the electricity passing through the unswitched side will actually continue to heat the water.

The anti siphon can be plugged up by crud from repairing a supply line causing low pressure on the hot side.

anything in particular you wanted to know?
