Sports, music, drama, clubs, volunteer work, work in general, writing or publishing your own poems/literature/music, outside research, getting involved in the community.

Extra Curriculars are a MUST for a college application.
It isn't how many you have it is how good they are. In other words, you could be a member of five clubs that just get together and not hold a leadership roll. But, it would look better to be the president of a club or the captain of a team.

Competitive activities are always really good. Honors Societies look really good. Student government is great. Sports teams and academic teams are all great.

Get involved in what you like, but don't limit yourself.
DO community service, either join a service club, like Key Club Leo Club, or INTERACT Club, most high schools have at least one of those, OR pick something you are passionate about, if it is the military, volunteer at a VA hospital, if it is sports, coach a special Olympics team (just ideas...). Colleges love when you start something new, too, so if you think there is something the community needs GO FOR IT! If you think there should be a reading program pairing high school kids with elementary school kids, set it up (just an example...do what ever you want)!
But don't JUST get involved in the community, pick a sport, if you go to a giant high school, and can't make any sports teams, because every athlete is a budding olympian, join cross country in fall (they usually [USUALLY] will take anybody willing to run a few miles!) and track in the spring: the track team is usually (again USUALLY!) large, so there (for the most part) arn't cuts.
other ideas:
if you love drama, get involved in the plays and musicals, even if you can't act, you could be a student director, or on the stage crew. if you are more of a musician, join band.
any ECA's look great, from 4-H and Scouting, to Sports and Community involvement. GET INVOLVED EARLY ON! If you are a freshman, then by soph. or JR year you could even have a bit of leadership experience in clubs or sports, which colleges LOVE!

MOST IMPORTANTLY :
DONT OVER COMMIT

your coaches/advisors/etc. will HATE if you flake out on events because you have spread yourself too thin; pick a few things, be commited; dont do 45 things and skip out on EVERYTHING!

GOOD LUCK with college!!!

I graduated from Dartmouth college. different than for the crap like the honour Society that no person cares approximately, I did precisely 2 significant issues: I based a literary mag (devoid of non-public laptop publishing application) and controlled to tutor out 5 subject concerns with a typewriter my senior twelve months, and that i replaced right into a deacon in my church. Oh, i replaced right into a Boy Scout for a pair of twelve months and a nil.5, which offered the muse for my essay. that's it, dude. that's all I did. Now i'm unlikely to remark on what I did or the admissions technique, because of the fact final time I did that, what I wrote have been given deleted. i've got been via admissions, recognition, and commencement, so i think of i recognize what i'm conversing approximately, and that's all i will say.

What they are looking for is what kind of person you are and how you currently give back to the community. It can be as a Big Brother or Sister, or a volunteer at a hosipital.

What do you give others, what are your interests outside of academics?

Anything that shows leadership development and your ability to balance school and other activities. Your involvement also shows school spirit so that will help too!! Good Luck!
