There are roughly 1.5-2 million known species of animals on the planet. The vast majority is found within the class Insecta. The insects make up roughly 80% of the known species on earth.
Estimates range from anywhere from 3 millions to around 100 million, but these are just estimated by people working in the field of taxonomy and biodiversity

There's a LOT!
The U.N. Biodiversity Council estimates 1.75 million (175,000,000) and other biology studies were just slightly less at 1.5 million.
You know what's creepy is that over HALF that number is insects and 300,000 are beetles. ICK!
Pretty cool stuff!

There is no 1 answer! It changes on a daily basis, because breed of animals and plants are becoming extinct every day.
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that 13 species (of both plants and animals, insects, etc.) die off every day. Scary when you think about it.

It is always changing. New species are being discovered and named all the time, as well as others becoming extinct.
