In some relationships it might make for a happier couple. It has nothing to do with intimacy, which should not only be limited to the bedroom.
This is about when it's time to turn the lights out and actually sleep.
There are many valid reasons couples find it works for them. There are people who suffer from heartburn and need to have a mattress raised, but one spouse can't sleep that way. Or another couple where one snores and so sleeping through the night may be impossible. Or perhaps there is a new baby in the family and the wife wants to breastfeed in bed without disturbing her partner's sleep.
I say whatever works for a couple and makes them both happy and satisfied is not to be judged by anyone else.
If so many couples were happy with the status quo, then 50% of all marriages wouldn't end in divorce.
Maybe these people are on to something. hee hee
My compliments.

I agree with the part that lack of sleep can cause crankiness towards your spouse. But I disagree on separate bedrooms. I believe the human touch and affection does wonders for a relationship. If there is an issue like snoring, try breath rights. Sinus problems, take allergy medicine daily. Bed too small, get a bigger bed. If you want a separate bedroom then why have a partner?

I have trouble sleeping even under the best of conditions, and I bed with a husband who snores and jitters his legs at night (and sleeps like a rock through it all). For seven years I've been dragging my butt to the couch every few months when it gets too much. He always feels terrible to find me there the next morning. He says he can't sleep without me in bed with him (sweet, but not true), and would be heartbroken if I moved to another room.
But it is one of the few things we occasionally fight about. I think if it got to the point where it was a serious stress on our marriage, I would force the issue. I don't know how I could do it without hurting him, but I know I'd be able to trade the intimacy for a good night's sleep.

You are either an early riser or have been kept awake, If loud snoring is a problem I think separate bedrooms is a must as you only end up resenting your partner keeping you awake, after all you don't see the well off types sharing , you can all ways have a kiss and a cuddle before you go to your own bed.

My parents both snore...loudly.
They've been sleeping in separate rooms for the past 10 years. They get along better than ever. Of course there are what I like to refer to as "sleep overs".
The sleep thing is important. People get pissed off if they get woken up in the middle of the night.

I guess it would depend on the couple. My parents have separate bedrooms and they still hate each other. My husband and I share a bedroom and still love each other dearly after 16 years of marriage.

no way the whole point of marriage is being close to the person you love and that includes in bed, marriages probably break up due to lack of closeness

I share a bed with my husband.
However, I think it would be nice to have some seperate space to go to, and it would be nice to have somehwere to go when he starts snoring louder than a elephant.
Still, I doubt I would do it. You'd lose so much intimacy.

think its a bit drastic, but if it works for that particular couple then i see no problem with it,
my husband works away a lot and i defiantly sleep better alone, who knows!
