I'm moving to Chicago but will be working near Gary, Indiana. I want to live in and around Chicago. What would be the best place to live in and around the city and nightlife and beach but also be a reasonable distance to work. I think Wrigleyville might be too far north. I think Lincoln Park would be sweet but still maybe too far. I am a 23 year old recent college grad that loves to go out and enjoy life. I hear Gold Coast is nice but for a little older crowd. Lincoln Park would be ideal because it is near great bars, the beach, and plenty of gyms and restaurants. How is Bucktown or an area a little more south? Any places with good nightlife (bars, ladies, clubs, gym, beach, etc)? All input in appreciated. Thanks!

The Gold Coast and Lincoln Park are great places to live, but if you are going to be working near Gary, you are going to need a car, because the public transit system between Gary and Chicago is poor. That being said, neither the Gold Cost or Lincoln Park is a great place to keep a car, parking it there is expensive. The rent isn't exactly cheap either.

I'd look at the southern suburbs, or even perhaps something in North-West Indiana.

The best thing to do is talk with other people who are around your age who are working at your future employer and find out where they are living.

Having lived in Northwest Indiana for 11 years until moving to the west burbs 3 years ago Whiting, Indiana is a well kept secret. While it might not be huge on nightlife it will be close to work and it is a really nice city. I hear Bronzeville is also becoming popular.

A cheaper alternative would be to live in Indiana (Merrillville, Munster, Highland) and just commute to Chicago to hang out. Those are all great areas and its about a 15 minute ride to Chicago. Also the daily commute in traffic from those areas would be greater than an hour. Chicago is known for its rush hour traffic.Especially if your traveling on 80/94. Trust me I have have lived in both citys, Gary and Chicago.

You've asked this question and similar ones several times for a month. Some excellent advice has been given. Follow up on some of it. Get in the car and check out the suggestions. Find out for yourself that Chgo offers many diverse and interesting places to live. The right one will depend on you.

Haven't you asked this questions about five times already? You've gotten some great answers. Why not go back and check them again? They haven't added any new neighborhoods to the city in a few months now, so everything is pretty much the same.

Considering where you have to work, I'd say Hyde park. It's south and really nice over there. It's near University of Chicago.

I'd check the crime rate by zip code. This will greatly influence what you pay for insurance.
