Living in Rancho Bernardo, I rarely take the I-5 in San Diego. However, ask me about the I-15, and I will know exactly what to say. Anyways... I work in Carlsbad, around the College Blvd/Palomar Airport Rd. Area. I need to get to Downtown San Diego for an appointment at 6:30 (at around A St). I get off of work at 5:30, and I know it is cutting it close... Anybody know exactly how bad the traffic is?

I live in Pacific Beach and work in the college blvd/Palomar Airpor road area too. You won't be able to make it in an hour on Thu or Fri unless traffic is light for some reason, which it can be. It usually takes me about an 45 to an hour to get from my work to home, but the exit and traffic in PB add at least 10-15 minutes. If you leave at 530 you'll probably be about 10-15 minutes late after you get there and park. I know traffic can kind of jam up after Old Town so if it does you might want to get off and take Pacific Highway from around Old Town. You should really give yourself at least 1hour 15 min to be safe. But if you have an appt on Mon or Tue you can probably get there in less than an hour, esp Monday. If you go to www.traffic.com you can enter in Palomar Airport Road and your downtown exit and it will tell you how long it will take to get there in current traffic conditions. If you can be like 10-15 min late to the appt then you can leave at 530, if not then I would try to leave by at least 515 to be safe.

Having taken that drive for years, I would say you would be hard pressed to make it by 6:30 to downtown. The I-5 /I-805 merge is still undergoing construction and the traffic from the north to the south is still better than the other direction, but not good. Once you hit I-52 it's the same as coming down I-15 at the I-52 - so you know that drive. Never good during rush hour. After about 6:30 the drive is generally pretty good, and if you can leave at 4:30 instead of 5:30 you would be assured of having a wait in downtown - but you may need that time to find a parkking space if you're anyplace near City College and the evening classes are starting.

Depends on what day of the week. If you talking Friday .. GOOD LUCK! During the weekdays you will still have traffic because you are hitting 5:00 traffic. The best day to travel is Sat or Sun.

It's exactly horrible!! Especially around the merge. It's not much better than the 15 is, personally I think it's worse. I would guess it would take at least 1-2 hours to get that far.

It is 1 % less bad than the I-15 at the same time. Unless you drive on the shoulder of the road I don't think you will make it.
