So where, exactly, is the startup entry list in the windows registry? All of the external registry editors I have can list them, so it has to be in there somewhere...Micro$oft...if only Apple were cheaper...

Not quite sure what you are trying to do.. If this doesn't answer your question write me and I'll write you back in morning.

But in registry the programs that run are in hkey current user

and Hkey Local machine the route to get there is ..

STart >Run> Type in - regedit - then OK >
then you will see HKCU and HKLM

follow the tree down on both ,,
The route ,,
Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current version>Run
Run once..

I'm going to assume you mean what all is starting. Well, it's all over the registry, but the best tool I've found is called AUTORUNS. It's on Microsoft's web site for FREE, do a search for "sysinternals". It lists everything that loads when you boot and you can disable and even delete items. There's a couple other good system utilities there, but I'll let you discover them.

If msconfig is too scary and hard for anyone to read, there is an easier way. Go to http://www.acelogix.com and get Ace Utilities. It has a 30 day trial. also check the freeware section has a few good programs. I bought Ace cuz I liked it so much.

Goto run, type msconfig, and get to the 'startup' tab. Check out the location column
