Depends where they have cut it off. Sometimes it is quite easy. People I know use hatpins or similar to push through the large tails leading to the meter, and attach jump leads to the pins. You use pins because when pulled out the plastic sheaths re-form around, and the meter man hopefully doesn't find any holes or tampering. I had one meter man spend hours "reading the meter" just because he saw an avometer and some electrician's tools in the kitchen and electricity consumption was low. And I hadn't fixed the meter. BTW be careful to use insulated gloves. If no visible wires are live - find them using a live wire finder available from DIY shops. If you live in a terraced house or semi you can easily tap into next door's electricity supply using the hatpin method.

Equally, to get free gas, turn the meter round, or (less dangerous) turn it down to a trickle so that it doesn't trigger the meter - some old meters are not sensitive,

But of course, don't do any of the above if you have any sense, because such acts are illegal and dangerous. I knew someone in Stockport who blew himself and his garage sky high doing the gas meter trick!

As one of the other people said, some charities will pay an electricity bill and social services should have a list, or you can get the charities digest from the library. Some need a referral from Citizens' Advice bureau or Welfare Rights service or Social Services. Good luck.

Try getting one of those portable honda generators.
You get some very cheap Chinese made ones or cheap Indian ones nowadays.
Try this only untill you have managed to get the utility people to come to fix your power back on once you have paid the bill.
If the electricity company people come to know you actually contemplated doing something illegal by asking this question, they will give you a nasty look at the very least. And sue you at the worst.

You don`t want to know. 1. its against the law, 2. you could get killed, 3. the power company is bound to catch you. 4. when they do they will fix it so it can`t be turned back on. 5. You will be black balled, and have to put up a very large deposit in order to ever get power again. 6. the power companies have a way of passing dead beat names from one to another. They also have very long memories.

Sorry but if you are going to dance you have to pay the fiddler.

Depending on where you live, you pop the meter cover off take meter out and OH WAIT THAT IS ILLEGAL AND YOU WILL GO TO JAIL. Then they will take the meter off and you will have a huge fee to get it back. Not to mention you can get electrocuted. Maybe you can try and pay the bill or by yourself some candles and flashlights.

You have to pay your bill. Call the company. They may be able to restore your power after a partial payment. They can set up a payment plan for you if you need one. Call them and learn what options you have.

For temporary relief, buy a huge extension cord and put a second male end on it. Then plug it into a neighbors outside socket and into one of your sockets.

This is only good to run your lights really, but then the police and crime lab won't be in the dark after your neighbor fills you with hot mauser lead.
