In the 1980 Winter Olympics the US beat Russia in the semifinals. Buzz Schenieder had the first goal, Mark Johnson had 2 and 3, and Mike Eruzione the Captain had goal 4 the winning goal.
They then beat Finland in the Gold Medal match, and again came from Behind

Mike Eruzione, the captain, had the game-winner with 10 minutes left in the third period. "Buzz" Schnieder had the first goal of the game and then Mark Johnson had goals number 2 and 3. To help the USA team beat the Soviets. However, this game was not the championship. Beating the Soviets allowed the US team to advance and play Finland for the gold.

United States has never played Russia in the final game of the olympics.
It is a common misconception because so much emphasis has been placed on the USA win over the USSR in 1980.

Mike Eruzione scored the winner against the Russians, but the U.S. still had to beat Finland to win the gold medal, which, of course, they did.
